Bacteria and viruses, neutralized without chemicals.

UV purification for your home.

Ultraviolet purification works by exposing water to a specific wavelength of UV light that damages the DNA of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, rendering them unable to reproduce and effectively inert. Nothing is added to your water, and no chemical disinfection byproducts are created.

UV systems are especially important for private well households in Blair, Fremont, and rural areas where well water is not treated by a municipality. Surface contamination events, flooding, or aging well casings can introduce coliform bacteria even into wells that have historically tested clean. UV provides continuous disinfection protection without adding any chemicals to your water.

A UV system installs as part of your whole-home treatment train and works best on pre-filtered water, since sediment and particles can shadow microorganisms from the UV light. For well households, we typically pair UV with a sediment pre-filter and any other treatment the free water test identifies. All systems are NSF/ANSI 55-certified and installed by a licensed plumber.

What's included

What you get.

  • Free in-home water test

For well households, we test for total coliform bacteria, E. coli, and other parameters before specifying the UV system capacity needed.

  • NSF/ANSI 55-certified UV system

Our UV systems are independently certified for Class A disinfection, the level required for water with potential microbial contamination.

  • Sediment pre-filtration

UV effectiveness depends on water clarity. We include sediment pre-filtration to ensure microorganisms can't hide behind particles.

  • Licensed-plumber installation

Installed by a licensed plumber on your main water supply line, downstream of pre-filtration and before any points of use.

  • Annual lamp replacement guidance

UV lamps degrade over time. We provide a lamp replacement schedule and the correct replacement lamp for your system.

How we do it

The Pure Water Co way.

  1. Free water test

For well households, we test for bacteria and other parameters to confirm UV is needed and to size the system to your flow rate.

  2. System sizing

UV systems are sized by flow rate in gallons per minute. We size yours to handle your home's peak demand without dropping below effective UV exposure time.

  3. Licensed installation

Our licensed plumber installs the UV chamber on the main supply line, wires the ballast, and confirms the lamp output is reading correctly.

  4. Post-install confirmation

We confirm UV intensity readings are within effective range and walk you through the annual lamp replacement schedule before we leave.

FAQ

UV purification questions.

No. UV purification uses light, not chemicals. Nothing is added to your water and no disinfection byproducts are created. The microorganisms are simply rendered unable to reproduce.

Yes. UV is effective against both Giardia and Cryptosporidium, protozoa that are resistant to chlorine at typical treatment levels. This makes UV particularly valuable for surface-water-influenced wells.

UV lamps typically need replacement annually, even if they still appear to glow, because UV output degrades before visible light output does. We provide the correct replacement lamp and a maintenance reminder schedule.

UV addresses microbial contamination but does not remove iron, hardness, nitrates, or chemical contaminants. For well water, it is typically one component of a broader treatment system determined by your [comprehensive water test](/services/well-water-treatment).

Generally no, because municipal water is already disinfected with chlorine. UV is primarily recommended for private well households or after events like flooding that may compromise a well's integrity.
