What whole-home filtration does
Whole-home systems install at the main water supply line where water enters the house. Everything downstream of the system, meaning every faucet, showerhead, appliance, ice maker, and outdoor spigot, receives already-treated water. There are several types of whole-home treatment, each targeting different water quality issues.
- Whole-home water softener: removes calcium and magnesium (hardness) through ion exchange. Prevents scale buildup in pipes, appliances, and on fixtures. Does not remove chlorine, nitrates, lead, or most other dissolved contaminants.
- Whole-home carbon filter: removes chlorine, chloramines, and many volatile organic compounds. Improves taste and odor of water at every tap and shower. Does not remove hardness minerals, nitrates, or heavy metals.
- Salt-free conditioner: prevents hard water minerals from bonding to surfaces without removing them. No salt, no brine discharge. Does not remove contaminants, only changes mineral form.
- Iron filtration (for well water): removes dissolved and particulate iron and manganese. Usually installed upstream of a softener for well water households.
- UV purification (for well water): neutralizes bacteria, viruses, and protozoa with UV light. Adds no chemicals to the water.
Whole-home systems are designed for pervasive water quality improvements, the things you want addressed at every use point in the house. What reverse osmosis does
Reverse osmosis works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane with pores small enough to reject dissolved ions, molecules, and larger particles. The EPA and NSF/ANSI 58 certification standard recognize RO as effective at reducing a broad list of contaminants: dissolved salts, lead, nitrates, arsenic, PFAS compounds, fluoride, chromium, and many others, up to 99% removal in a properly functioning system.
Under-sink RO is the most common residential installation: a compact system installed under the kitchen sink delivers purified water through a dedicated tap. A refrigerator line can be added during the same installation. RO produces water at low pressure, so a small storage tank holds the treated water for ready-on-demand access.
The under-sink RO system is a point-of-use solution. It doesn't treat water in your shower or laundry or dishwasher, only at the tap you connect it to. For most households, that's intentional: the goal is high-purity water for drinking and cooking, not necessarily for all household uses. A whole-home RO system does extend that coverage to every fixture, but it's a larger infrastructure investment suited to households with the most demanding water quality needs, such as households with very complex well water, or those where whole-home water purity is a priority.

These systems work well together. The RO membrane lasts longer when softened water runs through it, because calcium and magnesium accelerate membrane fouling.
Does RO water need to be remineralized?
RO membranes remove essentially all dissolved minerals, which produces very clean but distinctively flat-tasting water. Some people prefer this taste, while others find it bland. A remineralization post-filter adds controlled levels of calcium and magnesium back to the treated water, improving taste and reintroducing beneficial minerals that the membrane removed. Whether to add remineralization is a personal preference, and we can install it at the same time as the RO system or add it later.
